Why do people fake evidence of cryptid and UFO encounters? Obviously in this digital age a good story or video can get you hundreds if not thousands of online hits before anyone even really try's to debunk the event and once something uploaded it stays there "on the line" (as Vince Vaughn would say ;) ) and there is definitely money to be made. But why discredit yourself...why bring that attention. Obviously not every reported sighting or event is as it seems...human error must be brought into account. Many people honestly believe they saw what they say but after careful analysis their encounters can be dismissed as miss-identification of something mundane or scientifically explainable. But what about the others? What about the people that purposefully fake evidence. Are they looking for notoriety..their 15 minutes of fame? Are they trying to discredit legitimate sightings and an turn their researchers or are they just trying to be funny and think there is no harm in it? What do you think?
On a bigger scale how do television shows that do this effect those of us that seriously study these phenomena? There are a few shows on television that that say that they are reality but are obviously staged. Do they have a place in our community? Are they 100% detrimental to the scientific study of cryptids and UFO phenomena or is the fact that they are entertaining and bring in an audience that may have not originally looked into the subject enough for us to justify their existence? Is the fact that they have have made these subjects more mainstream and accessable to a wider audience, while in turn falsifying video and evidence for television appeal, enough for us to welcome them with open arms to the arena of legitimate researchers?
Please give us your opinions.
